The Turkey trap in "Europe" plans
This is the single most common mistake travelers make with Turkey: they buy a "Europe" eSIM, assume it covers Istanbul, and discover on arrival that it does not. Turkey is not in the EU, so it falls outside EU roaming rules, and many regional Europe plans either exclude it entirely or treat it as a separate add-on. We cover this in detail in the best eSIM for Europe guide.
The fix is simple: buy a Turkey-specific plan, or carefully confirm Turkey appears in the country list of any regional plan before you pay. Browse plans that definitely include Turkey on the Turkey eSIM page.
Good news: Turkey data is cheap
Turkey is one of the better-value eSIM destinations. At the time of writing, a 5 GB plan is around $2.33, and a 20 GB plan runs about $6.99 for 30 days, roughly $0.35 per GB. That is cheaper per GB than most of Western Europe. Prices change, so check the live numbers on the Turkey page.
Network and coverage
Turkey runs on three carriers: Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom. Turkcell has the widest coverage and the strongest reputation, especially outside cities. Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and the Aegean and Mediterranean coastal resorts all have solid 4G and growing 5G. Cappadocia's main towns (Göreme, Ürgüp) are well covered, which matters because you will be navigating between valleys and viewpoints constantly.
Remote spots, deep valleys on a hike, or the early-morning balloon launch fields, can drop signal, but coverage across the tourist circuit is reliable.
How much data to buy
Istanbul is dense and map-heavy: ferries, trams, and winding old-city streets mean Google Maps stays open. Cappadocia and the coast add constant photo uploads. Budget 1-1.5 GB per day if you are actively exploring. For a typical 7-10 day trip, 10 GB is comfortable; two weeks or heavy social posting points to 20 GB, which is still under $7.
What to check before buying
Confirm Turkey is explicitly listed (not assumed). Check validity covers your trip. If you are combining Turkey with Greece or Bulgaria, you likely need either two plans or a regional plan that names all of them, do not assume one covers the other. Established providers like Airalo list per-country coverage clearly.
Bottom line
Do not rely on a Europe plan for Turkey. Buy a Turkey plan (they are cheap and well-covered) or verify the country list explicitly. Compare current Turkey options on the Turkey eSIM page.
